Connecting with Nature Through Art: How Creative Expression Promotes Wellness

Writer: Stephanie Watson YaegerStephanie Watson Yaeger

I've been DIY-ing projects and practicing creativity for years and I get into these, we'll call them "spells" where I HAVE to do the project. Something just pulls me to it, and I cannot get the idea out of my head. It wasn't until I read the book, Big Magic, by Elizabeth Gilbert, that I was able to connect the dots a bit. I can't fully explain how much the book impacted the way I think about creatives so I will just tell you to add it to your reading list and end with that, ha.

What I've realized is, like nature and entrepreneurship, creativity, whether you use it as an outlet or even possibly, a distraction like me, can be a tool for healing, growth and can spark new ideas beyond the "project" you're working on.

I admit, whether it's a conscious or subconscious decision, I mostly use creativity as a tool to get myself through something. Sometimes I make the decision to do something creative KNOWING I need the distraction. Other times, like this past weekend, I felt pulled to paint the kitchen and I JUST had to do it. Tuesday came around and I realized I did it because it was my parents 36th anniversary and I needed something else to focus on.

You can call it dissociation, or you can call it a way to get through the day. Whenever you feel that pull to create, go with it because you'll never know what growth or idea will come from it.

I hosted a wellness event this past June and I have a couple wreath rings leftover. I'm going to pick a couple clients at random to gift them to so watch your mailboxes. They'll be used to spark creativity and connection to nature and I'm looking forward to seeing what the recipients create.
